Rolfing

Rolfing® Structural Integration is a system of physical manipulations and education. It aims at improving posture and movement by re-establishing adequate tonicity and spatial relationships of the body’s connective tissues. It is achieved through purposeful mobilisation and release of the fascia network and strategic movement sequences.

Fascia is the component of the connective tissue which permeates the entire human body. Fascia holds the body structures together by providing stability and tautness.

ROLFING FAQ

Rolfing benefits most people. All bodies have some degree of disorder and compensation in their structure. Therefore adults of any age who suffer from any limiting physical discomfort may benefit from Rolfing. Rolfing does not aim at addressing nervous disorders or pathologies.

No, Rolfing should not hurt. There may be some transitory discomfort when seriously restricted tissue is softened, differentiated and reintegrated.

Rolfing is not a substitute for osteopathy and chiropractic. In chiropractic and osteopathy the overall idea is to work more directly on the vertebrae of the spine and other bony structures in order to release and treat mechanical restrictions. Both chiropractic and osteopathy use high velocity, low amplitude manipulations. On the other hand Rolfing exclusively focuses on balancing connective tissues and fascia which surrounds all muscles, organs and joints, and create the overall structure (shape) of the body. This in turn changes the alignment of bones, overall structure and functionality. Rolfing is unique in seeking to organise and lengthen the body along a vertical line.

One of the most common misconceptions is that Rolfing is a form of deep tissue massage. The purpose of Rolfing is to balance and align the body along a vertical line by working on deep fascial layers and muscles that have been pulled out of position by strain or injury. Rolfing SI requires awakeness and participation of the client.

Of course not. I recommend that you try a session and see how you respond to the work first.

Most clients receive their Rolfing session in comfortable underwear. It is important for the practitioner to be able to assess the client’s physical structure and see the changes that occur during and between sessions. It is essential that the client feels comfortable, therefore if you are not comfortable being in your underwear, for women a two-pieced swimsuit or low rise running shorts or yoga-type stretchy shorts and sports bra (preferably with thin straps) are also suitable. For men, boxers are also suitable. You will be covered by a blanket while receiving your Rolfing session on the table.
