In our yoga physical (asana) practice we side bend, rotate and twist our body like a pretzel. We do it on both the right and left sides.
Often, if not always, one side feels more restricted than the other. There can be many reasons for this, such as for example postural habits, being right or left-handed, spinal deviations, an old injury on one side or doing repetitive asymmetrical movements in our daily tasks.
I think there is also a structural reason that perhaps we do not fully realise.
The human liver is large and heavy. It weighs at least 2kg, it is the densest organ of the body and its largest part is on the right side of the abdomen.
Although one can say that the human body appears pretty symmetrical overall, as we practice yoga postures we realise that it’s not. I would not be concerned about this as we are not looking for perfect symmetry but for a sense balance, harmony and wellbeing.
More information about the liver is available here.
Most importantly enjoy your yoga practice!
