When referring to the human five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) we are actually referring to the five basic senses and missing others.
Indeed humans have more than five senses. I’m not referring to intuition or supernatural abilities but to senses that are essential to humans and that we use every day.
The Vestibular System of the inner ear (see diagram below) detects movement of the head and allows to orient ourselves in space without relying on the eyes or sensing the ground with the feet.
People with an inhibited vestibular system will experience tensions and discomfort in the body. In my experience, particularly in the shoulders.
When the body knows where it is in space it can relax. A fully functioning vestibular system is essential for decompressing the body and moving with ease and fluidity.
When the vestibular system is fully functional and it is combined with extraordinary athletic abilities and coordination then the kind of magic performed by NBA star Ja Morant becomes possible. Notice how he remains balanced while flying towards the hoop.
During a Rolfing session we release tensions that can inhibit the vestibular system.
